The San Miguelito Mutual Water Company (SMMWC) is a private mutual water company organized under the authority of the California Department of Corporation on July 29, 1983. SMMWC has acquired water rights to three (3) potable water wells and has contracted with State Water for the delivery of up to 275 AF of water per year. SMMWC operates and maintains a Water Treatment facility and distribution system for domestic and irrigation purposes for its shareholders. SMMWC also serves its shareholders by operating and maintaining a Wastewater treatment facility and collections system that meets current regulatory requirements. SMMWC serves approximately 1,600 residential and business customers, in the San Luis Bay Estates area of Avila Beach. SMMWC provides water and wastewater services in an environmentally responsible manner to its shareholders, on a not-for-profit basis.

Position Summary

Performs inspection and maintenance service and repairs on all equipment at the water treatment plant, water source facilities, water distribution system, and wastewater treatment plant and collection system. Uses independent judgment and discretion and works with minimal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Familiar with PC applications such as Windows, Excel, Spreadsheets, and Internet
  • Have effective communication (both written and verbal) and organizational skills
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include standing, walking, sitting, for extended periods of time, lifting, pulling, pushing heavy loads (up to 50lbs.), digging, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, reaching over head with arms, use of hands to grip, grasp, handle or feel      
  • Valid California Driver’s Class C License
  • Overtime and on-call duties may be required
  • May include working in all weather conditions, during all hours of the day

Technical Skills and Experience

  • Possession of a State of California Department of Health Grade T2 & D2 or obtain within one year of placement in this position and 2 years of related field experience
  • California Water Environmental Association Grade I Collection Systems Certification or obtain within two (2) years of placement in this position
  • SWRCB Grade I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate or obtain within two (2) year of placement in this position 
  • Intermediate math skills
  • Familiarity of hydraulics, chemistry and biology in water and wastewater treatment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operates and monitors, under general direction, a variety of water supply and treatment equipment such as:
  • Groundwater wells
  • Pumping systems
  • Chemical feeders
  • Measuring and control systems
  • Filtration and exchange units
  • Performs maintenance of plant equipment and facilities
  • Conducts water level measurements and interprets data
  • Loads and unloads chemicals
  • Collects samples for analytical purposes
  • Performs basic and intermediate laboratory analytical techniques on water samples
  • Performs calculations related to dosing, flow rates, and other weights and measures
  • Complies with all safety standards and practices as they pertain to equipment, facility operations and chemical handling
  • Water meter installations, dig outs, maintenance and monthly reads
  • Maintain all facilities, keeping the inside and outside neat and clean
  • Underground Service Alerts – locate and mark
  • Share on-call and weekend duties
  • Respond to customer inquiries/complaints
  • May require after-hours work due to 24-hour system operations.
  • Available for emergency response, 24 hours/day, seven days/week
  • Performs other duties as assigned
