Construction Utility Worker I/II description image

Keep the Water Flowing. Join the Front Lines.

At Rainbow Municipal Water District, we’re all about providing clean, reliable drinking water and wastewater services to the vibrant communities of Rainbow, Bonsall, and parts of Vista, Oceanside, and Fallbrook. We take pride in making a difference—and as a Utility Worker in our Construction Department, you’ll get to make a difference too.

We’re looking for team players who are ready to roll up their sleeves and jump into action—especially when a water main breaks in the middle of the street or a hydrant gets taken out by a late-night fender bender. When stuff hits the fan, you’re the hero on the scene.

This isn’t just a job—it’s essential work that keeps our community running. You’ll be part of a skilled construction crew that installs, maintains, and repairs the backbone of our water system: mains, service lines, valves, pumps, motors, and hydrants.

We’re hiring at multiple levels (Utility Worker I or II) based on your experience and certifications. Got Water Distribution certs, a Class A license, or AWS D1.1 welding cert? You may qualify for a higher level—and higher pay.

Utility Worker I- Pay range: $28.01-40.62/hour

Utility Worker II – Pay range: $32.21-46.69/hour

This is a boots-on-the-ground, make-a-difference kind of job. Spots will fill fast, so don’t wait—apply early! We may close this posting once we have enough qualified candidates.

Is This the Job for You? Let’s Find Out.

This could be your perfect fit if:

  • You’ve got skills and you’re proud of it.
  • You’re in your element working with your hands, outdoors, and doing physical work that actually matters. Whether it’s fixing, building, or digging—you’re all in.
  • You’ve done the work and want something more.
  • Maybe you’ve worked in construction, roads, pipelines, or landscaping—and now you’re ready to step into a career with purpose, stability, and room to grow. Welcome to the water world.
  • You’re the go-to person when there’s a job to be done.
  • You’re not afraid of overtime, emergency call-outs, or holiday work. If a pipe breaks at 2AM, you’re the one who shows up ready to roll.

What You’ll Need to Bring to the Table:

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bonus points if you’ve taken classes toward an AA in Water Distribution or a related field.

Certs & Licenses:

  • A Water Distribution Operator D1 Certificate? Nice to have, will be required within 6 months.
  • A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake & tanker endorsements? Even better.
  • AWS D1.1 Welding Certificate? Another big plus.

(If you don’t have these yet, no worries—we’re still interested, especially if you’re motivated to earn them.)

Experience:

  • 1–2 years of construction work on roads, pipelines, or similar is required.
  • Landscaping experience? That’s a plus.
  • Know your way around backhoes or excavators? Even better.
  • Got pipeline welding or GIS experience? Nice extras but not must-haves.
